The Central Co-operative Credit Union Limited joined credit unions around the world to celebrate International Credit Union (ICU) Day on October 21, 2021, under the theme “Building financial health for a brighter tomorrow.”  This theme highlighted the way credit unions are responding to the financial challenges of members in this Covid-19 pandemic by working with them to help rebuild their livelihoods.

In honor of ICU Day, the Society organized a week of activities from October 18 to October 22, 2021. The activities for this Credit Union week deferred from the norm but Central continued its focus on community. As part of the week’s activities, timely donations of food and other needed supplies were made to the Home for the Aged in Portsmouth and the Grotto Home in Roseau.

Much focus was spent on the membership in appreciation of the many years of support. Members participated in trivia questions, creole wear competition and other prize-winning activities. The highlight of the week was the first-ever Annual CCCUL Health Talk which was held virtually. The event highlighted two prominent health professionals in the name of Dr. Gilda Nesty-Tonge an

d Dr. Diane Robinson-Armour who spoke extensively on pertinent health issues. The session was informative and was well received by members.

According to the General Manager Cleo Watt, “International Credit Union Day commemorated the credit unions’ proud history and promoted awareness of and support for the credit union and the financial cooperative difference. We at Central continue in this legacy of “People helping People” as we continue to provide financial products and services for the financial wellbeing of our members especially during this Covid 19 pandemic. Central has stepped up in many meaningful and tangible ways to support our members and we are happy for the success of this weeks’ activities”.

The ICU week of activities has officially ended. However, the Central Co-operative Cred

it Union Ltd on Friday October 29, 2021, will recognize and award Health Care workers who were nominated during the Health Tuesday celebrations; the Credit Union will also make a much-needed donation to the Portsmouth Covid Hospital.

Since 1948, International Credit Union (ICU) Day has been celebrated annually on the third Thursday of October. This year marked the 73rd anniversary.
